Isn't this similar to what MSWindows does with drivers; my understanding that the reason why (for example) Netflix won't output from my MSW laptop to my HDTV even in standard mode is that Netflix will only allow movies to be shown over what they call a secure connection.
And if I recall correctly I had to update some MS software before I could watch movies on Netflix.
