Sounds like firefox started but could not get the lock from your old preferences so went ahead and created a new preferences set. Thus the whole default everything. I have seen this happen from time to time. Usually it will give you a dialog box saying that the profile is in use and do you want to create a new one but sometimes it doesn't.

You can often replicate this by starting firefox then starting a completely new firefox afterwards.

This happened last night:

I left for dinner with several firefox windows open. This is common for me; we normally have five to eight firefox windows open (Linux desktop)
without problem.

When I came home I switched to an empty desktop (I normally have 12
desktops available to make sure I always have an empty one <smile>).

I opened Firefox.

Up to then I hadn't realized that all firefox windows had been closed.

But I got a new firefox window opening, with a message that my Firefox
had been updated. And discovered several disconcerting issues:

no history, no bookmarks, no nothing.

Like a brand new install. Version 2.0.0.3. Which I think was the same
I had installed previously.

I closed firefox.

Searching this directory:

~/.mozilla/firefox/

I discovered several firefox directories in the format xxxxxxxx.default.

I moved them all out of the way and restarted firefox. I then closed
firefox and found a new firefox directory: r1ro795u.tempuser

I removed the contents of r1ro795u.tempuser and replaced it with the
contents of the oldbenkg.default directory.

It appears that directory was built (renamed?) when last firefox crashed
a few days ago (it does that from time to time; this version is known
to use up memory). It was good that I had it because I now have back
all my bookmarks, history, etc., through the date/time it was created.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might have happened?

I'm switching from backing up my home directory system weekly to doing
it daily.

Is there anything else I can/should do?

Thanks.
