FWIW to anyone... I installed Ubuntu-9.04beta on a spare tower, and among other things decided to test hibernate. When I turned on the computer, it hung hard, no output at all. on a whim, I zeroed out the swap partition (with DBAN <dban.org>), after which ubuntu booted and I was able to log in. Not that I had any data to preserve, but might be useful to know if such happens in a different situation.
