These products are free as in beer. There is no real catch. Just a slim downed
version of the non-express version. They take out some nice features so you
want to buy the real version. When you talk about .net, I'm guessing you're
talking about the C# Express or VB Express products. The Mono runtime can
handle many apps compiled using VS or the Express equiv. It doesn't support
everything so watch out. For example, a few years ago, the mono folks were
trying to create a complete implementation of win.forms. I think now they have
that project finished. Also, the mono project is working on suppprting the LINQ
API. Another example is that the version of .net mono supports is always
behind Microsoft.

I just found this page this morning:

http://www.microsoft.com/express/product/default.aspx

and I know a bunch of posters here use Windows and Linux in mixed
environments.

Does anyone know anything about the "express" products? Are they really
free as in beer, as they appear to look?

The pages say they're for .net. I wonder if they'll work with mono? Or
with the .net/mono implementation on Novell SLED.

Anyone ever come across these before? Anyone know if they create
programs that work in a linux implementation of Mono?

The reason I'm interested is because years ago I was a VB programmer.
