I don't know that it is a joke either and they are probably smart enough not
to kill off MySQL.  Killing MySQL or starting to charge everyone for using
it is not going to suddenly make people want to pay the money, or even have
the money to spend.

Personally I would like to see the two merged (I'll call it, OrQL for this
conversation), have the base which would be MySQL's core for small things,
and have something like licensed modules for the enterprise features that
Oracle has.  This way everyone can just download the core and when they need
a feature they can pay for the license and add the module to the config,
think Apache modules.   Obviously a good bit of work, and I'm sure there are
plenty of arguments not to do it, but having a single product that has the
best of both worlds and can have its feature set expanded easily with
modules would be great.
