Well, my original statement was a bit of oversimplification. Elaborating just a little, I have a very strong preference for using software that falls into one of the following two categories: * 20-30 years obsolete * written 100% by me 100% from scratch In other words, if it isn't written by me from scratch, I want it to be somewhere on the order of 20 to 30 y old. If it's newer than that, I want it to be written by me from scratch. My primary platform is my own version of UNIX on VAX hardware. The source I have used as my starting baseline was released from UCB in 1988, and every change in my system relative to that baseline has been made by me. This base system includes most of the things Charles has mentioned: compiler (PCC), kernel and userland utilities. Whenever I am forced to use stuff that is not written by me and is not 20-30 y old (like that web browser part), I absolutely hate it and do everything I can to minimize my use of such software. That includes minimizing my use of anything web-based: I avoid it like the plague. OK, there is also a third category of software that I would like to use: software written by others to my specifications, i.e., me hiring someone to write some software following my philosophy which has diverged from that followed by the rest of the world some 20-30 y ago. But I have no idea when, if ever, I will have the kind of money needed to pull that off.
