He's obviously a little confused. His views are uninformed, not stupid. He needs to understand the model of open source that actually succeeds financially, rather than just the "gift culture" that people tend to focus on. Yes, that is a big part of it, but it's not the ONLY part. It's possible to get paid for your work and still release your code to the public.
