did you do a default install or custom partitioning? If custom... did
you make a /var?

or you might be looking in the wrong place. type 'pwd' it will tell
you the present working directory.  if you are not at / (root) ls
isn't going to show you /var.

that is a default used by many distros. Its not written in stone.
