I also agree on Virtual box especially if you are planning to run a single
VM on ubuntu desktop.  you can get free license of ESXi for personal use but
you need to  understand that ESX and ESXi do not install as an application
inside an operating system they install directly on the server.  So if ESX
is where you choose to go you will need to dedicate a box just for that.
VMWare server installs to ubuntu as an application.  Xen is another good one
that is free and will allow you to run multiple virtual instances.

All of them have advantages and disadvantages you will have to read to find
the best one for you.
