Michael, Windows networking over PPP? Samba emulates Windows, including all the chattiness and crazy overhead that the Windows network uses. While I haven't tried it, I'm going to guess that trying to do that over PPP would be pretty painfully slow.
If you happen to establish any serial coms between the laptop and your linux host, just use kermit or some other transfer protocol (xmodem, ymodem, zmodem, remember those?) and copy the installer zip file to a directory on the local laptop drive. Even running an ftp server on the linux host, and using an ftp client from windows would be more fun over PPP than trying to map a windows drive to a samba share.
