I use Perl to automate system tasks.  Perl and Python have benefits have
benefits and disadvantages over each other.  Its really a matter of
preference.

I am a VI user and I would suggest using that.  It is a lot easier
developing on the box you are testing on rather than copying a script back
and forth to your PC especially when you are troubleshooting syntax issues.

If you are learning a new language and want to put off learning Vi for a bit
you can use....

It is a FREE windows text editor this will help you get started and it can
handle Perl, Python, and various other languages

If you are newer to Linux command line and newer to programming this may
help you get started.  I hope you eventually pick up VI it will make you
much more efficient.
