They've already done a non linux variant by way of the FreeBSD kernel: http://www.debian.org/ports/kfreebsd-gnu/
Phoronix also did some head to head tasks for debian linux versus debian freebsd versus freebsd: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=debian_kfreebsd_h210&num=1 It's pretty cool, although I don't know enough about the FreeBSD kernel to say whether or not it buys you anything, although if you are comfortable with the kernel it would probably interest you more. As for Debian running the Hurd microkernel, I am curious if it will ever be a widely deployed/used kernel, what impact it would have (if any) on linux (development, the market share, etc), and how far behind features it would be. Also linked to that first article is a bit more history on Hurd: http://www.h-online.com/open/features/GNU-HURD-Altered-visions-and-lost-promise-1030942.html On Thu, Jul 14, 2011 at 6:33 PM, Chris Penn <cantorm...@gmail.com> wrote: > The Hurd is the GNU project's replacement for UNIX, a popular > operating system kernel. > > The GNU Hurd developers are moving forward with their work on the free > software operating system.
