Was just taking a look again at the mount info
/dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro)

root@TCSL-RANDR2:~# df -h /var
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1              17G  6.8G  8.6G  44% /


I wonder if there are some errors that are causing it to remount as ro? 
Would that make any sense?  How might I check?
