Yeah, it's almost unworkable if you don't have at least 512 MB of RAM. 
I'm sitting happy with 4GB, but I have to remind myself not everyone so 
regularly abuses their computer.

A good virtualization tool is Virtual Box OSE (virtualbox.org).  It's 
free and it has pre-cut settings for most linux distributions already in it.
