I think I've seen this exact discussion on this list before, but if  
not I'm sure you can Google for other discussions. I know many people  
still do the 2x memory sizing for their swap space, but since I've got  
2GB of ram in my desktop machine and never seem to hit swap I've been  
keeping a 1x memory area for swap.

I think people are beginning to shift to the mindset of only having  
enough swap space to act as a safety net for those times when you run  
out of space in RAM. Really, if you want performance gains, you don't  
ever want to have to use swap space at all.
