Run Gentoo.  http://www.gentoo.org/.  It's not for those faint of
heart, but I learned almost everything I know about command-line Linux
administration from using (particularly screwing up) Gentoo.

Yes, I did some stupid things that really messed up my Gentoo system
in years past, but I learned from them, and each time I learned how to
bring the system back from the failure without having to reinstall.

Quite possibly the best OS out there.
