Window Maker is interesting in that it's a cut-down window manager.
It's excellent for low-memory or otherwise slow systems, or for
systems where you don't want to fool around with big statist GUIs (eg.
your first ever webserver, etc. - you really should admin webservers
from the command line exclusively, but if you're just starting out, I
see nothing wrong with keeping a GUI there for a safety net).

If you're using Window Maker, I'd suggest poking into the GNUStep
programs. It's a GNU port (reincarnation?) of the NeXT Step software
environment. So you get an email app which looks curiously like
Apple's Mail, you get a file browser that looks curiously like Finder,
etc. They're all really stable, and really fast.

Also, you might experiment around with Fluxbox or FVWM, which are
similar to WM, but not the same. Both are alternative GUI systems,
both are a blast to use. FVWM is largely abandoned IIRC, but Fluxbox
still has an active user base (somewhere).

Ain't Linux great? Not only do you get to choose between Gnome and
KDE, but you also get all these other things to choose from as well!
