I finally managed to solve the problem and thought that it would be good to share the solution with all the users, so that they can solve it easily if they ever face it.
Dell latitude D531, and many other laptops actually use a module bay dvd drive and thus requires the PCI,IDE and BLOCK device drivers to be installed together. These can be searched when configuring the kernel.
