The first thing I would do is run the Update Manager.

The latest version of Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) has many reports of
the kind of problems you're describing (freeze ups and unable to switch
consoles). The Ubuntu 9.04 problems include: freezing, Xserver issues
(fonts, Compiz, 3D, etc.), CTL-ALT-Backspace to restart Xserver has been
disabled (a really dumb choice by the distro, in my opinion), and more.
Visit the Ubuntu forums; post your question there and you'll see by the
responses what I'm talking about.

If you *are* running the latest Ubuntu, I suggest you go back to the LTS
(long term support - 5 years!) version of Ubuntu (8.04 I think).

I really like the Debian package manager in Ubuntu, but to date I've had
my best overall Linux experience w/Red Hat based distros, CentOS, in
particular.

Good luck!

John
