ah -- right, I've got fetchmail configured to get the mail for me, and then procmail to direct it to folders. After that, I can use mutt or evolution, or Kmail, or whatever I'd like to read the mail. I'm not sure about getting evolution to download pop into maildir. Any chance you could get your backup utility to perform a diff instead? (might be a quicker option than changing evolution's behavior, provided you've nothing against mbox files).
