mc is definitely available; did you search for mc? (instead of midnight
commander?) sounds like a repository issue as pointed out by Conrad. Edit
the file /etc/apt/sources.list and uncomment the commented source lines
(there should be lines for universe, multiverse, etc.)  Then update & search
for mc again.
