Try k9copy or DVD95 converter for movies. Try Handbrake to rip DVD movies. Make sure that you have libdvdcss2 installed for copy protected disks. For Ubuntu make sure you have the restricted-extras for you desktop environment installed. For regular DVDs and CDs, K3B should work fine.
