How do you plan on using Linux? Do you plan on running it alongside another
OS? Do you plan on running it in a VM? Is it on a desktop, server or
netbook? (There are separate versions for each.) Is it for a PC or Mac? Is
it 32 or 64 bit? etc. The most flexible and best supported are the *buntus
(Ubuntu, Kubuntu, etc.) It offers WUBI which allows you to install it from
inside Windows.

Other good distributions to consider are: Mint, PCLinxOS, and SimplyMEPIS.
However, if you don't mind a steeper learning curve there are over 300
others, each one offering a different experience. Popular choices that are
harder but great are: Debian, Mandriva, Fedora, Sabayon and OpenSuSE.

Linux offers live CDs meaning that it can be run from the CD. Burn them to
re-writable CDs and you can try as many as you want. You can also run it
from a usb key using Unetbootin or as shown on PendriveLinux.com (different
techniques).
