OK here is the output first just the iptables -L then same command as
root and then as sudo

cmcanu...@gateway:~$ iptables -L
iptables v1.4.4: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Permission
denied (you must be root)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
cmcanu...@gateway:~$ sudo su iptables -L
su: invalid option -- 'L'
Usage: su [options] [LOGIN]

Options:
  -c, --command COMMAND         pass COMMAND to the invoked shell
  -h, --help                    display this help message and exit
  -, -l, --login                make the shell a login shell
  -m, -p,
  --preserve-environment        do not reset environment variables,
and
                                keep the same shell
  -s, --shell SHELL             use SHELL instead of the default in
passwd

cmcanu...@gateway:~$ ^C
cmcanu...@gateway:~$ sudo iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination
cmcanu...@gateway:~$ ^C
cmcanu...@gateway:~$
