If you want to schedule something without keeping the terminal open, have a
look at the 'at' command:

$ at now + 30 minutes
warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh
at> export DISPLAY=:0
at> vlc music.mp3
at> <EOT>
job 2 at Sat Feb  6 13:01:00 2010
$ atq
2       Sat Feb  6 13:01:00 2010 a eggled
$ date
Sat Feb  6 12:32:02 CST 2010

So, in 30 minutes it will try to play music.mp3. Since I didn't supply a
path and music.mp3 doesn't even exist, I'll probably just see vlc with a
missing file error, but that's ok. It's a cool utility.
