Is there any reason you are using Ubuntu 7.10 instead of 8.04, 8.10, 9.04, or 9.10? 7.10 has been end-of-life for almost a year. The newer releases will have newer bug fixes, newer versions, and newer codecs to play media files.
My recommended solution would be to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. Then read the page on Restricted Formats: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats Good luck and let us know how things go.
