Would you please help me understand the following: 1- Novel's site claims: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server has more than 2,500 certified applications, including popular open source applications as well as proprietary applications from leading software vendors such as SAP, Oracle and IBM. Gartner, in its UNIX:Wedged Between and x86 Rock and a Mainframe Hard Place, paper at the 2008 Gartner Data Conference shows SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with more certified ISV applications and higher ISV enthusiasm than for Solaris 10 on x86. 2- Sun claims support for 11,000 third-party applications. I am not clear on difference between third-party vs. Independent software vendor. I do realize that one is referring to the vendor, which possibly has a number of software, and the other talks about applications. I also know that it is not too difficult to compile an application for two different platforms. So the question is who is the clear winner in this area and why? What are the metrics that one needs to consider if application support is important to them? I have not been able to find Gartner’s paper. Lastly where does Red Hat stand? I would sincerely appreciate any references you can provide.
