The Linux kernel is developed by Linux Torvalds and his team of developers under the Linux Foundation. He works on it fulltime. He is responsible for the naming and controls all aspects of kernel development. The naming seems to follow a pattern. Initially there was 1.0 (actually it started with 0.1), but then it went to 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 and now 2.6. Notice that the first two numbers are even except for the first. The third number counts up as the kernel is revised and it uses even and odd numbers. We are now at 2.6.37. Various revisions will be maintained by different developers and there are developers for the various architectures. Some releases are regular releases and some are long-term stable releases.
