What is the make/model of the printer in question? I quoted below where I saw the problem. Did you go into cups and try to install the old printer driver or a new one? It seems to me that nothing is wrong with opensuse or cups but what driver you're using. It can see the printer and manages to connect to the print server. What is going on is the printer can't give Cups a valid response when cups is looking to validate that the printer received a job properly.
