Why go through such a mess of opening the server just to check if the disks are working or not. You guys would hate me for this, but there is a simpler way to check if the HDDs are working. Just try installing Windows.
By the way, I too had a same prob not with IBM X-346 server but with my home machine. The machine has hardware raid controller and SATA HDD, Linux recongnizes SATA as SCSI HDD. Whenever, I tried to install Linux, I use to get no HDD found.
I beleive I can help. Can you tell me which linux version, you are trying to install.
