Friend ,
This is sameer chandorkar ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
Here is a step to setup NIS server
Steps on Server Side:-
1) vi /etc/sysconfig/network
NISDOMAIN=LINUX -------------> (any name for NIS domain)
2) on command prompt
# nisdomain LINUX
3) # nisdomain --------------------->(this is just for test )
4) # service ypserv restart
5) # service yppasswdd restart
6) # /usr/lib/yp/ypinit -m
then
ctrl + d press to add your computer for nisdomain
7) now add any new user then run on server following command
# cd /var/yp
# make -----------> to update the database manually
8) then if your user's home folder name is /home then
setup nfs for that
# vi /etc/exports
/home  *(rw,sync)

9) # service nfs restart
10) #exportfs

now server is ready for nis but make sure whenever you add any user run
# cd /var/yp
# make -----------> to update the database manually

Clientside
1) # authconfig
provide information like
nis server domain name :- LINUX
nis server                       :- IP of server

2) # vi /etc/auto.master
/home                      /etc/auto.misc       --timeout=60

3) # vi /etc/auto.misc

*                       -rw,soft,intr           <ipofserver>:/home/&
4) # service autofs restart

then try login users which you are creating on the server
sometime it fails so setup dns for resolving

A * in the key field matches all keys. An example for the usefulness is the following entry:
*         &:/home/&
This will enable you to access all the home directory of local hosts using the path /mountpoint/hostname/local-path
