First of all you must know the concept of VPN. Please try it on windows PC so that you can easily understand in Linux. It works on PPTP OR L2TP protocols. Please go through this link

For VPN connection One of the above port must be open in firewall i.e. if you are using firewall. If u don't have any firewall in your network then it's very easy to configure.
