I don't know from where u got my email id but I am glad that u consulted me
and I will help you to the best of my knowledge and effort.
The first thing as per my knowledge is that the concept of attribute is not
used in RHCE Exams and that u were simply confused by that perception. Even if
the attribute concept was used it won't restrict root login, also as you said u
tried chattr command and it gave u a operation denied error. It simply states
that the permission of the shadow or passwd file must had been changed.
The most simple step that u should had taken in the exam was to login in
single user mode. From there u should had checked the permissions of passwd
file (which is rw-r--r--) and shadow file (which is r--------). If the
permission was right then u should had created a normal user and then reboot
and login from the newly created user. If the login is successfull then compare
the two lines of new user and root from the passwd and shadow file from single
user mode. If there is a difference than make changes accordingly to the root
line.
You should have also changed the root's password from single user. One more
file to look at was /etc/securetty and check whether all the line was commented
or not, if it was then uncomment all lines, save it and check again.
Last but not least u should have read the log file /var/log/messages for
recent logs which gives a clear idea why root couldn't login.
Though there are a number of ways through which we can restrict root login
but the ones asked in RHCE exams are limited as discussed above.
