I have really no idea about the coding line. I guess, there wont be many openings for freshers either. You need to build your resume by working on open source project. Join one of the open source teams online and assist them in it. You can then mention that you have an experience. Well, on kernel module programming ehh.. i am not too sure.. but i think its torvalds's team that handles it. I could be wrong about that Please check. My take is that if you want to get into to coding, then join into teams making open source projects, even start a project on your own if you can. Put it up. Then you will have your name behind the project. I know of two guys from delhi who made a script that uses ncurses to display system information. Long script but a simple one. It now put on novell's site. I think his name is makrand harazia or something. Search for sysinfo on novell's site You may find his mail address. He could be of some help. His project was put up about 1 and half years ago. Now, he may be in a position to guide you better.
