But if you are using tar command to store the data then check man page for tar 
command if i am not mistaken tar command has switch/options to achive this task.

How do I delete single file from a tape (LTO)?

"mt -f /dev/st0 erase" command will erase entire tape, i only want to

delete single file from tape.
