Hello,
         If you can see "X" in /etc/passwd that means shadowing is enabled, the 
encrypted form of password can be seen in /etc/shadow file. Commands to enable 
shadow is # pwconv, this will put "X" in /etc/passwd and encrypted password in 
/etc/shadow. To disable shadowing command is # pwunconv, this will put 
encrypted password in /etc/passwd.

hi all my linux friend             i m student of rajiv bannerjee sir,          
    suppose i m a root user i have one file in /etc named shadowin dat i can 
see passwd in encrypted form in 2nd column of root's row so i want to convert 
dat encrypted form of passwd to our normal form plz help mei cannot see dat 
password in md5 format in /etc/passwd file because shadow is disabled right ?i 
can see only 'x' der  but i can see dat passwd in /etc/shadow file dat i want 
to convert again back to our normal form once again plz help me
