Hello, If you can see "X" in /etc/passwd that means shadowing is enabled, the encrypted form of password can be seen in /etc/shadow file. Commands to enable shadow is # pwconv, this will put "X" in /etc/passwd and encrypted password in /etc/shadow. To disable shadowing command is # pwunconv, this will put encrypted password in /etc/passwd.
