Hi,

Below are the difference:

A primary group is the group id that gets used when you create files and/or
directories. Secondary groups are used to control permissions on files
and/or directories. In other words, any file/directory with a group id that
you are a member of (primary or otherwise) will grant you access according
to the group permissions.

Primary group: The file and directory created by the user will belong to the
Primary group.

Secondary Group:
Say a file / directory belongs to group "opensource", all the users who are
member of this group by any means (i.e. this group is primary or secondary
group of those users), will be able to access that file / directory.

Ofcourse the level of access will depend upon the permisson this group is
having on that file and on the conditions that this group is primary or
secondary for those users.
