hey it looks like there is some thing missing in your /etc/profile
or some thing because of that some of your envirement variables are not set the
correctvalues it should get agter your profile has been loaded
check with # env or # set command and see variable HOME
and some other variales like GROUP
and try to search iternet
know your boot process II and III very well
i am sure you will get it
