Before addressing your problem, I would like to know whether there is
any specific reason that you want to use Red Hat 9.
Because RH9 is way too old, last stable release in March 2003. Better
try RHEL 5.4 or CentOS 5.4. Latest distros are updated and have proper
support for hardware.

Also post  "lspci | grep -i ether" output
