In Debian and Ubuntu, logging as a root user in X window system is *never* available by default since years, so you can't really say `nowadays'. I don't like that RH and related distros provide it. Newbies tend to use such systems a root user because providing super user password becomes annoyance to them, but then this very much compromises the default security GNU/Linux systems offer.
