Those symptoms indicates that the X-driver either have problem 'grab'ing the 
wacom-device, or doesn't even try. Does wacom_drv.so also comes from the 
0.7.6-4 package?

The driver should report if it succeed to grab the device or not in the 
log-file. You can find out with the following grep:
$ grep grab /var/log/<log-file-for-X>

Yes, that would look strange, but I think it's ok. My list looks like this:

$ xidump -l
stylus                         extension
PS/2 Mouse                     disabled
Keyboard0                      keyboard

And I have no problem using my touchpad/USB-mouse in gimp when the extended 
InputDevices are configured. I hope a PS/2-mouse doesn't make that much 
difference.
