Actually, I'm sort of doing something similar at the moment.

I'm using the erasor as a pen tool in GIMP, and I've removed 
"SendCoreEvents" from its xorg.conf settings. So I can use it for 
drawing in Window mode, which allows me to use the whole mouse pad for 
drawing. And then I flip the pen over for use as a cursor.

It works, but obviously it would be ideal if this mutual exclusion 
between "SendCoreEvents" and "Window Mode" could be eradicated.
