Thanks for your reply, Ping, I must have done something wrong, as re-installing from scratch did the trick. Apparently "make install" doesn't by default install the X drivers, I had to manually copy them (plus I'm on an x86_64 Fedora 6 system), that seemed to do it... I will try the driver version you suggest.
