Have you've upgraded the drivers (kernel and/or X-driver) when you started to get this behaviour? In that case it might be related to that (I kind of doubt it though). I have seen the same behaviour from an old mouse I had (like 15 years ago).. I wore down the switches for the buttons and sometimes it was hard to register a button press. Other times I got contact bounces (like you got). I've not seen anything like this lately though in any device I have, so I hope It's not that. If it is a HW-problem and fixing the HW can be a problem (I replaced the microswitches in my mouse..), then maybe some code that can eliminate contact bounces could be used? This is maybe something that can be used to some extent for the multiple click one might get with the stylus/eraser/... if you press just about right to stay around the level that represents a click.
