Strange that it worked then, maybe Kubuntu provided some patched version 
for a while. I downloaded the Edgy deb package for 
xserver-xorg-input-wacom 0.7.2 and now it works again. The prebuilt 
wacom_drv.so from the original linuxwacom-0.7.2.tar.bz2 didn't work 
(generating events for the special buttons, everything else was okay).

I tried to access the raw data, but hexdumping it while running X locked 
up the X server.

I tried to search in  the archives but I always get (since days):
Unable to connect to search server
