After some more discussion off-line with Vince, and some examination of my
logs, and comments that were made here, it has become clear that they
bought the liszt database and the liszt people have been scanning my system
fairly regularly as far back as my logs go, which is only to August. Liszt
includes xxx-posting lists (exist solely to hold extra addresses of
posters), which no one would have listed on a form, but which do show up in
their web site.

IMHO the liszt database is not volunteer as they first indicated. They
gleaned stuff by lending lists commands to majordomo. This does not bother
me, as the existence of these lists is pretty much public and they are
there to be used - what I do object to is getting UCE from topica.com at
the addresses they bought that liszt gleaned.

The fact that I might put an address into a web page or attach it to a
list, by the way, even if it is voluntary that I put it there, should not
be construed as permission to send me UCE. The sender is guilty of
misusing the address, and trying to lay the blame off on someone else is
disingenuous.

It is beyond aggressive. It is the Mailing List Book Club strategy. It
bears a harsh resembalance to the spammer, "To be removed from future
mailings" strategy. I tried to search for my site, but 'squawk.com' or
'squawk' came up empty even though they have lists that are on this system.
