While BITNET used an IBM protocol (NJE), it was not run by IBM. It was
also largely funded by the members, although IBM did contribute some
support, as did some other corporations.
It is true that LISTSERV originally ran only on IBM VM systems using
NJE. Unix, NT, and VMS were supported when LISTSERV became a
commercial product.
