There are too many miscreants on the net now, and too few sticks, and too little time to beat them all. Automated (software) mechanisms which can totally prevent people from doing stuff to you that you would rather not have done to you are the only viable long term solutions. Unfortunately, we're not totally there yet. Much important work remains to be done.
