I tell them "Hmm, I don't know for sure what might be happening. How about
you try again but cc: me on the message you send to majordomo, and if you get
something back, send me a copy of that too."
At least three-quarters of the folks I ask to do this manage to remove
themselves with no problems within 24 hours -- maybe the prospect of a human
seeing what they're trying inspires them to actually read the documentation at
that point. (Every post to every one of my lists includes a pointer to
detailed list use instructions, including a "What To Do When The List Commands
Don't Seem To Work" section.)
