One other solution for AOL users who want to post plain text:

If you use Netscape 6, the mail part of the program lets you set up your 
AOL account so that you can send and receive your mail AOL mail with 
Netscape! This is surprising, since no other e-mail program can do this. If 
you post from Netscape 6, you can post plain text.

Looking at the Netscape settings, it's getting the AOL via IMAP from 
imap.mail.aol.com. I tried setting Eudora up to get my AOL mail the same 
way, but it didn't work. Interesting.
